Hi, I’m Marc!
If you'd told me a few years ago that I'd one day trek to Everest Base Camp, write a book about it, organise walking events, and win Hiking Blog of the Year...
I'd probably have laughed.
I'm not an elite athlete.
I'm not a mountaineer.
I'm just an ordinary guy who discovered that saying "yes" to one adventure has a habit of leading to another.
That's exactly why I created Walking in Circles UK.
Because I believe adventure isn't reserved for the super fit, the fearless or the experienced.
It's for anyone prepared to take that first step.
It all started with a walk...
Like many people, life became busy.
Work.
Family.
Routine.
Walking became my escape.
What started as the occasional countryside walk quickly became longer hikes, ultra challenges, mountain adventures and eventually expeditions across the world.
Since then I've completed dozens of marathon, 50km and 100km challenges, trekked across some of the world's most spectacular landscapes, guided corporate hiking events, and helped hundreds of people discover the joy of getting outdoors.
Yet I'm still the same person who gets ridiculously excited packing a rucksack before sunrise.
Then came Everest...
In 2022 I trekked to Everest Base Camp (5,364m) before crossing the spectacular Cho La Pass (5,420m) and continuing to the breathtaking Gokyo Lakes.
It changed far more than I ever expected.
The journey inspired my first book:
Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lakes: A Midlife Journey to the World's Greatest Trek
Not because it's a story about climbing mountains...
But because it's really a story about what happens when ordinary people decide to do something extraordinary.
Since then I've returned to Nepal to complete the incredible Annapurna Circuit Trek—proof that one adventure usually leads to another.
What you'll find here
Walking in Circles isn't just another hiking website.
It's where I share:
Detailed hiking guides
UK walking routes
International trekking advice
Training tips
Honest reviews
Personal stories
GPX routes and resources
Ideas to help you plan your own adventure
Whether that's your first 5-mile walk...
Your first marathon hike...
Or the trek you've been dreaming about for years.
Beyond the website
When I'm not writing you'll probably find me:
Leading guided walks
Talking about my Everest journey
Planning the next adventure
Or sitting in a café with a map wondering...
"Where can I walk next?"
My philosophy
You don't need to climb Everest.
You don't need expensive gear.
You don't even need to be particularly fit.
You simply need to start.
Because some of life's greatest adventures begin with a single decision to step outside your comfort zone.
If my stories help you discover a new trail, book that trip you've always talked about, or simply get outside more often...
Then Walking in Circles has done exactly what I hoped it would.
So welcome.
Grab a brew, have a look around, and hopefully I'll see you somewhere out on the trail.
Happy hiking!
Marc
