THE COUNTRYSIDE CODE: RESPECT, PROTECT & ENJOY

Whether you’re heading out for a countryside walk, tackling a long-distance challenge or exploring somewhere new, we all have a part to play in looking after the places we enjoy. The Countryside Code provides simple guidance to help everyone respect other people, protect the environment and enjoy the outdoors safely and responsibly.

Respect everyone

  • Be considerate to those living in, working in and enjoying the countryside.

  • Leave gates and property as you find them and follow signs provided by landowners.

  • Keep to marked paths where possible and don’t block access when parking.

  • Be friendly and courteous to other walkers, cyclists, horse riders and local communities.

  • Keep dogs under effective control and give livestock plenty of space.

Protect the environment

  • Take your litter home and leave no trace of your visit.

  • Don’t light fires and only use barbecues where they are permitted.

  • Keep dogs under control and always clear up after them.

  • Care for nature — don’t damage, disturb or remove plants, trees, rocks or wildlife.

  • Follow local signs and advice, particularly around livestock, wildlife and sensitive habitats.

Enjoy the outdoors

  • Plan ahead and check your route, weather conditions and any local information before setting off.

  • Be prepared with suitable clothing, footwear, food and water for your walk.

  • Know your limits and allow enough time to complete your route safely.

  • Follow signs and local advice, particularly where routes or access may have changed.

  • Enjoy your surroundings, take your time and help keep the countryside a welcoming place for everyone.
