JANUARY 2027
New Year’s Day – Friday 1st January 2027
Surrey LDWA
20 miles or 12 miles | Merstham, Surrey
A traditional New Year's Day challenge walk or run around the Surrey countryside. Rather than following a fixed marked route, you'll navigate between a series of unstaffed checkpoints using grid references and clues — so there's a bit more to this one than simply following the person in front!
The event returns for its 52nd edition in 2027 and is organised by Surrey LDWA.
New Year’s Day – Friday 1st January 2027
The Irregulars LDWA
21, 13 or 10 miles | Dewsbury, West Yorkshire
A brilliantly named New Year’s Day challenge starting and finishing at The Leggers Inn in Dewsbury. Choose from three circular routes, all converging at the main refreshment checkpoint — so you can even shorten or lengthen your walk on the day.
Expect a brisk winter walk or run, refreshments at checkpoints and, very appropriately, a wee dram on the route and a hair of the dog back at The Leggers. Route descriptions, maps and GPX files are available from the organisers.
Sun 3rd January 2027
Essex & Herts LDWA
25 miles | Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex | 9-hour limit
A substantial winter challenge through the Essex and Hertfordshire countryside, following a circular route from Stansted Mountfitchet. Expect a mixture of footpaths, tracks, quiet lanes and plenty of open countryside — a proper day out to kick-start the year's walking.
The route is designed for experienced walkers and runners, with checkpoints and refreshments along the way and food waiting at the finish.
Sun 17th January 2027
Surrey LDWA
30 or 20 miles | Leatherhead, Surrey | Finish by 7pm
A proper old-school winter challenge on Surrey footpaths and bridleways, with a choice of 30 or 20 miles. The route changes every year and isn't waymarked, so you'll follow a detailed route description and need to be comfortable navigating if you stray off course.
This is deliberately a minimal-support event aimed at strong, self-reliant walkers and runners — and being January, the weather can add another dimension to the challenge!
Entries open 1 October 2026.
Sat 30th or Sun 31st January 2027
Ultra Challenge
42km Marathon, 21km Half Marathon, 10K or 5K | The Oval, London
Kick-start the year with a winter walking challenge through central London. Starting and finishing at The Oval, choose from the full marathon, half marathon or 10K on either Saturday or Sunday, with a family-friendly 5K also available on Sunday.
This one is strictly walking only, with routes taking in the Thames, historic bridges and some of London’s best-known landmarks. There are rest stops with snacks and drinks along the way, plus a medal, certificate and hot food waiting at the finish.
Sun 31st January 2027
Lakeland LDWA
23.5 miles | Kendal, Cumbria | 9-hour limit
A scenic winter challenge through the beautiful countryside surrounding Kendal, taking in Cunswick Fell, Whitbarrow Scar and Scout Scar along the way.
Starting and finishing at Abbot Hall Social Centre in Kendal, the 23.5-mile route has three checkpoints with drinks and light refreshments, plus refreshments and a certificate at the finish. There’s a 3pm cut-off at checkpoint 3, with everyone required to finish by 5pm.
Entries open 1 October 2026 for LDWA members and 1 December for non-members.
FEBRUARY 2027
Sat 6th February 2027
ROMBALDS STRIDE WINTER CHALLENGE
15th Airedale Scout Group
23 miles | Guiseley, West Yorkshire | 10-hour limit
A classic winter challenge through some of Yorkshire’s finest moorland scenery. Starting and finishing in Guiseley, the 23-mile route heads through the Airedale Valley before crossing Rombalds Moor and Ilkley Moor, with Otley Chevin providing another highlight on the return.
It’s a hilly, exposed winter route designed for walkers and runners, with checkpoints and refreshments along the way and a hot meal at the finish. Entries are limited to 550 places and opened on 14 September 2026.
Sat 13th February 2027
West Lancashire LDWA
24 or 17 miles | Rivington, Lancashire | 10-hour limit
A classic winter challenge across Rivington, Anglezarke and Turton Moors, an area sometimes known locally as the “Little Lake District”.
Walkers can choose either the 24-mile or 17-mile route, while runners tackle the full distance. Expect exposed moorland, reservoirs and some superb West Pennine scenery — plus potentially proper February weather, so full winter kit is required. Refreshments are provided at checkpoints, with food and a certificate at the finish.
Entries are already open for 2027.
Sun 14th February 2027
Surrey LDWA
10, 20 or 30 miles | Tilford, Surrey | Finish by 6:30pm
A new challenge for 2027 with a clever format: choose one, two or three different 10-mile loops, all starting and finishing at Tilford Village Hall.
The single 10-mile loop is designed as a gentler introduction to challenge walking and is family-friendly, while completing two or all three loops gives you a substantial 20 or 30-mile winter challenge. Route descriptions and GPX files will be available, with refreshments throughout the day and a hot meal after loops two and three.
Sat 20th – Sun 21st February 2027
West Yorkshire LDWA
50 miles | Leeds, West Yorkshire | 22-hour limit
Created to celebrate West Yorkshire LDWA’s 50th anniversary, the Roundhay 50 is a serious winter endurance challenge consisting of two different loops through the countryside around north Leeds.
Starting and finishing at St Andrews Roundhay United Reformed Church, the route takes in locations including Temple Newsam, Meanwood Valley and the Harewood Estate. There are 8am and 9am starts, with the later start aimed at faster walkers and runners.
Entries are already open, with a limit of 220 participants.
MARCH 2027
Sat 13th March 2027
Cancer Research Wales
3 peaks | Full-day mountain challenge | Abergavenny, South Wales
Take on three of the iconic mountains surrounding Abergavenny in one demanding day: Skirrid (486m), Sugar Loaf (596m) and Blorenge (561m).
Starting and finishing in Abergavenny, this is a strenuous trek over varied and sometimes steep terrain, led by qualified mountain leaders from ROC Adventure. It's designed for well-prepared walkers with a good level of fitness — and provides a cracking introduction to taking on multiple summits in a single challenge.
Sun 14th March 2027
Kent LDWA
30, 20 or 14 miles | Sevenoaks, Kent
Celebrating its 50th edition in 2027, this long-established challenge explores the countryside around Sevenoaks and the Kent Downs, with three distances to choose from.

Choose from the full 50km challenge, approximately 25km or 10km and walk, jog or run at your own pace. Routes take in sights including the Royal Crescent, River Avon and sections of the Cotswold Way, with full support, food and drink along the way and a medal and finishers' T-shirt at the end.
Sat 20th March 2027
Clwydian Range, North Wales
26 miles | Approx. 1,900m ascent
A proper mountain walking challenge through the beautiful Clwydian Range, taking on a marathon-distance route with almost 2,000m of climbing along the way.
The route tackles a series of summits including Moel Famau, the highest point in the Clwydian Hills, with steep climbs, open ridges and fantastic views across North Wales. This is very much a walking marathon rather than a running event, and one for hikers who fancy something considerably hillier than your average 26-miler.
Sun 21st March 2027
Arthur Rank Hospice Charity
Approx. 17 miles | Cambridge to Ely, Cambridgeshire
A point-to-point charity trek following the Fen Rivers Way from Cambridge to Ely. It’s a much flatter proposition than most of the mountain challenges on this page, making it a great choice for walkers wanting to step up to a substantial distance without huge amounts of climbing.
The route follows riverside paths and Fenland countryside before finishing in the historic city of Ely, with the challenge raising funds for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.
APRIL 2027
Sat 10th April 2027
London LDWA
28 miles | Central London
A rather different long-distance challenge, taking on 28 miles through London rather than heading into the hills. The Capital Challenge is designed as a walking event and follows a point-to-point route through parks, waterways, historic neighbourhoods and some less familiar corners of the capital.
The 2027 event is limited to 300 participants, with entries opening on 1 November 2026.

Sat 24th April 2027
Charity Challenge
42km | Hampton Court to central London | Walking only
Take on a full marathon-distance walk following the Thames Path from Hampton Court towards the heart of London.
The 42km route follows the river through southwest London, passing riverside parks, historic landmarks and some of the capital’s best-known stretches of the Thames before finishing at Millennium Bridge.
This one is particularly well suited to your calendar because it’s a dedicated walking challenge rather than a running event, with organised support along the route and the opportunity to fundraise for a charity of your choice.
Sat 24th April 2027
Help for Heroes
9.5km | Scafell Pike, Lake District | 978m summit | 5–7 hours

The route climbs via Lingmell Gill, Hollow Stones and Mickledore before reaching the 978m summit, with qualified mountain leaders supporting the group throughout. Help for Heroes grades this one Red – Expert, so although 9.5km sounds relatively short, this is a serious mountain day requiring good fitness and appropriate kit.

Weather permitting, the bespoke route climbs Yr Wyddfa via the Snowdon Ranger Path before descending on the Llanberis Path. At around 20km and reaching 1,085m, Help for Heroes grades this Red – Expert, so expect a serious mountain day rather than an easy summit walk.
